Hello and Welcome Back to Part 3 with Abbie and Maddie!

Today we are speaking with two host moms from Western Washington and we all share a Seattle connection and girls in technology.

Maddie and Abbie share au pair host family advice from agency agnostic point of view with their blog called My Au Pair and Me. Instead of question and answer blogs that are more personal one to one questions, they write actual helpful posts to encompass what Host Families face every year with their au pairs.

When it comes to the interviewing process what do you do? Do you interview the parents of the au pair?

Abbie – Screen out based on videos. No don’t interview parents. However, when friending an au pair the whole family started friending Abbie on Facebook.

With former au pairs they keep in touch with Facebook and Maddie is also friends with Abbie’s au pair.

Maddie – Maddie’s former au pairs are in touch with each other. One tip is to ask the question and being very specific such as where did you drive today? Not where you drove yesterday but how they answer the question about today …  Also, au pairs that ask questions about the family and has thought through the experience. Even after the interview have a stream of questions.

Showing interest in the family is also key as well. Not just saying ‘yes’ to every question but really taking time to ask questions about the family.

Back to school with Covid – how are you handling this?

Maddie – Unknowingly booked a vacation the first of the week of school and the first day of school was in a car ride or a cabin. After the vacation, it was not easy and it is a struggle to make it a normal day of school virtually but they are getting through it and welcome tips and best practices from parents. When doing virtual school how to create a team with au pair and really work on a style that can be successful

Abbie – Comes from a family of teachers so it is not an issue to take on a school day at home. They focus on school and still do extracurricular activities after homework gets completed. Abbie will step in when the kids are bargaining with the au pair for outdoor recess when they need to finish school work.

Where can they find you?

All the resources you can find … such as getting a driver’s license, checklists, etc.
